Oasis on the Rock Roundup July/August 2006
Girlstown Hosts Second Annual Christian Music Festival
It has been said that life is a gift, and it offers us the privilege, the opportunity, and the responsibility to give something back by helping others.
Giving back is just what the young women at Girlstown are learning and doing. The Y.E.S. group, Youth Engaged in Service, hosted the second annual Oasis on the Rock Christian music festival.
Oasis on the Rock is a faith-based community event organized by Girlstown residents. The day-long event featured numerous bands and solo artists performing contemporary Christian, gospel, southern gospel, rock-n-roll and rap music – all with a Christian witness.
“I love this event,” said Kelsi, president of Y.E.S. “God sent the event to us to help people out.”
Oasis on the Rock is the result of the Y.E.S. members’ desire to help others in need. This year’s recipient of their assistance is the international ministry, Water for Life. The organization provides water to impoverished countries. Y.E.S. members chose Water for Life as the beneficiary of their efforts because they have a heart for young children and a strong desire to support the ministry in its efforts to drill water wells in Africa.
A few residents contributed their time and talents to build a hope chest out of aged wood. The hope chest was the grand prize of a special raffle.
Jon Jon, a singer from Lubbock, was one of the festival’s more popular entertainers. “I like Jon Jon,” Kelsi said. “His songs have a lot of meaning. He has been where most of us have been and he understands us.”
After his energetic performance, Jon Jon said that he enjoyed his first visit to the Girlstown campus. “This event isn’t just about raising money for a cause,” he said. “These girls are learning to give, and God will see their heart and in return they will receive more than they know.”
